Modern Warfare 4 keeps your old Operators and blueprints in Warzone, but not your camos
By TourneyTime ·
The short version
Your legacy camos are not coming with you. When Activision announced Carry Forward for Modern Warfare 4’s Warzone on 24 September, it said weapon camos from older games would stay available. On 28 September it added a correction to the post saying that line was ‘incorrect’, and apologised for the error (Dexerto, GINX).
The rest of Carry Forward still stands. Operators, Operator Skins and weapon blueprints from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 stay available in Warzone from Season 1. Legacy weapons still lose Gunsmith, and the new Operator Skin toggle is still coming.
We first reported that camos would carry over, based on the original post. This page now reflects the correction.
What carries forward and what doesn’t
| MW4 Warzone, Season 1 onwards | |
|---|---|
| Games covered | Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7 |
| Operators & Operator Skins | Stay available |
| Weapon blueprints | Stay available, with their existing attachment setups |
| Legacy weapon camos | Not carried over (corrected 28 September) |
| Where legacy weapons live | The Legacy tab in the Loadout menu |
| Gunsmith on legacy weapons | Not supported |
| Old custom loadouts | Not supported for legacy weapons or blueprints |
| Legacy base weapons | A five-attachment version, unlocked through the Armory |
GINX says the camo change covers the mastery and event camos you’ve ground out on older guns. That stings for anyone who chased them. Dexerto notes that camos have not carried over between Call of Duty years before either, so the correction brings Warzone back in line with past years. It doesn’t cut anything extra.
The Armory detail comes from Dexerto’s and GINX’s reading of the corrected post. Neither explains how the unlock works yet.
What it means for your loadouts
The new Modern Warfare 4 weapons will be the only ones you can fully build and camo in Gunsmith. Legacy guns are fixed builds. A blueprint keeps the attachments it already has, and a base legacy weapon gets a preset five-attachment version. If your favourite loadout is an older gun with a custom build, screenshot it now. That setup won’t come across.
The Operator Skin toggle
The correction doesn’t change this part, and it answers years of complaints about crossover skins cluttering the battlefield (Call of Duty).
- With the toggle on, Operators and skins from other Call of Duty games are shown as Modern Warfare 4 Operators.
- It applies to enemies, party members and squadmates, in the lobby and during a match.
- Your own equipped Operator doesn’t change.
- It’s off by default and only changes your game. Other players still see what they see.
- It’s a Warzone-only setting.
If oversized or bright crossover skins have made enemies hard to pick out, this should give you a cleaner, more consistent look.
When it lands
Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday 23 October. The Carry Forward changes apply from Season 1, which Activision has dated for Friday 6 November, according to Insider Gaming. We’ll confirm the start time once it’s announced.
How the community is taking it
Not well, mostly. Dexerto reports plenty of unhappy players who had treated camo carry-over as the best part of Carry Forward, and the U-turn has been widely criticised. Most players still like the skin toggle, because it deals with visibility without taking away anything people paid for.
Sources we check
We start with Activision’s Carry Forward and Operator Skin toggle post on the official Call of Duty blog, including the correction added on 28 September. The correction’s wording matches across Dexerto, GINX and BestLoadout. The Season 1 date comes from Insider Gaming. If Activision changes anything again, we’ll update this post.
