Modern Warfare 4's open beta never beat its early access peak on Steam

Modern Warfare 4's open beta never beat its early access peak on Steam — Tourney Time Network

The short version

Modern Warfare 4’s beta record was set on day one and never beaten. The pre-order-gated early access weekend peaked at 115,145 concurrent players on Steam on August 21 — the beta’s all-time high. The open beta that followed, available to anyone on any platform, topped out at just over 113,000 on its opening Friday, about 2,000 players short (SteamDB, TheGamer).

That is the genuinely interesting number. A peak that stays flat when the gate comes down is a different story from a peak that simply declines.

The retention picture is better than the headline. Early access lost roughly half its concurrent players within 24 hours. The open beta was still near 100,000 a day in — a much steadier curve, even if it never reached higher.

The numbers

PhaseDatesAccessSteam peak
Early accessAugust 21–25Pre-order and code holders115,145 (August 21)
Open betaAugust 28 – September 1Everyone, all platformsjust over 113,000 (August 28)

The open beta closed on September 1. Both weekends ran with Steam reviews sitting at “Mixed”, with around 45% of reviews negative — a figure that did not move between the two weekends (TheGamer).

One number to treat carefully. Every outlet agrees early access roughly halved inside a day, but the reported second-day figure varies — TheGamer logged 51,582 at the time and later described the trough as nearer 60,000, while TweakTown put it closer to 28,730 (TweakTown). Concurrent counts swing hard by time of day, so snapshots taken hours apart legitimately disagree. The direction is not in doubt; the precise low point is.

What this does and doesn’t tell you

It doesn’t tell you how many people played the beta. Steam is the only platform publishing live concurrents. There is no public equivalent for PS5, Xbox or Switch 2, and Call of Duty has always been console-first — so the Steam chart is a trend line, not a headcount.

It doesn’t tell you the game is in trouble. Betas decay by design: people try the maps, hit their level cap, and stop. A first-day peak followed by a fast fall is the normal shape of one.

What it does tell you is that widening access from pre-order holders to the entire Steam audience produced no new peak. That is the comparison worth watching, because it is the one thing the open beta weekend was structurally set up to beat.

The complaints attached to those Mixed reviews were consistent across both weekends: aggressive aim assist, frame pacing on PC, small maps, spawns, and a punishing time-to-kill — plus backlash over AI-generated art. Infinity Ward moved on two of those in-beta, cutting damage ranges and headshot multipliers across the meta guns (see our Modern Warfare 4 beta TTK nerfs breakdown) and adjusting aim assist for the second weekend while saying the tuning was not final.

What happens next

Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2 (Xbox). Beta concurrents are a poor predictor of launch concurrents — a launch weekend pulls in the entire lapsed audience a beta never touches — so the useful read here is sentiment, not scale.

If you’re carrying beta habits into launch, the settings work is the part that keeps paying: our Modern Warfare 4 movement guide covers the mechanics that survived the beta patches, and the rest of our Call of Duty guides are here.

Sources we check

Concurrent-player figures come from SteamDB, which reads Steam’s own live player API — it is the primary record for the PC side and the only public one. We cross-checked it against TheGamer’s two reports (August 23 and August 30) and TweakTown’s August 24 piece, and the release date against Activision’s official Xbox store listing. Where those sources disagree — the early access 24-hour low — we’ve shown the spread rather than picking one. No cross-platform beta player totals have been published, so nothing here should be read as a total.

FAQ

What was Modern Warfare 4’s peak Steam player count?

115,145 concurrent players, set on August 21 — day one of the pre-order-only early access weekend. The open beta the following week peaked just over 113,000, roughly 2,000 short, despite being open to everyone.

Do these Steam numbers show how many people played the Modern Warfare 4 beta?

No. Steam is the only platform that publishes live concurrent-player data. There is no equivalent public figure for PS5, Xbox or Switch 2, and Call of Duty skews heavily console — so treat Steam as a trend line, not a headcount.

Did the open beta hold its players better than early access?

Yes. Early access shed roughly half its concurrent players inside a day, while the open beta was still near 100,000 twenty-four hours in. Reported figures for the early access drop vary between outlets, so the shape of it is clearer than the exact number.
